3 Ideas For Writing A Scroll-Stopping Hook

True or false…

A photo is enough to stop someone’s scroll on Instagram.

If you guessed false, you’re right!

Your photo definitely plays a part in stopping someone’s scroll, but it’s only half of the equation. More important? The first few words in your caption. The hook!

Why is the hook so important? Not only does it help stop the scroll, the hook is what gets people to stay on your post longer and click that read more button.

So how do you do it? Here’s three ideas:

Spark curiosity

This is the classic hook method. Think about the articles you click on. The magazines you pick up in the checkout line, and the captions that catch your attention. A lot of them spark curiosity to draw you in.

Examples:

  • Can I tell you a secret?
  • Want to know my number 1 tip for ____?
  • I have a confession…

Ask a question

People are on social media to be social. Crazy, right?! One great way to engage them is to ask a question.

Examples:

  • I need your opinion…
  • How would you handle this situation?
  • What’s your zodiac sign?

Speak directly to the right people

When you truly know who your audience is, you can speak directly to them. When you do, you will catch their attention and hook them.

Examples:

  • Attention small business owners
  • Where are my toddler moms at?
  • Hey first time homebuyers…

Once you hook them, then have to deliver on what you promised. Don’t leave them hanging or they won’t believe you the next time. After the hook is where you bring the value. Don’t forget a call to action in every post, too.
